Financial Secrets Revealed

Financial Secrets Revealed
Collective wisdom from business gurus, financial geniuses and everyday heroes
Amanda Cassar

Amanda Cassar is a financial adviser from the Gold Coast in Queensland. She is a qualifying member of the international group the Million Dollar Round Table, which is where it appears she has met many of the people she interviewed in this book.

It’s no secret that hearing about other peoples’ life journeys and how they manage their finances is of high interest to me. Hence, I found this book to offer a lot of value in that regard. She interviews a good spread of women and men, which I like and more importantly for us Aussies most of the interviewees are from Australia. No offence to other nations intended, I just find that many of the great personal finance books and personalities tend to be American which means some of the information presented is not relevant to our financial environment.

One interesting take away was David Batchelor’s ( The Wills & Trusts Group, UK) comments about learning early the benefit of personal development. He follows Jim Rohn’s advice from his book The Art of Exceptional Living. Live on 70 percent of what you earn. Break the other 30 percent into three pots: 10 percent for long-term savings, 10 percent for future financial independence and not to be touched. 5 percent to give to charity and finally the last 5 percent for spending on what ever you want.  Not a bad strategy.

Think and Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich
Napoleon Hill

This is a classic self-help book that has a lot to offer…. if you can get past the intensity of Hill’s voice and out of date ethics. I found it a bit awkward and confronting at times. In his defence it was written in 1937 but it certainly doesn’t reflect modern values that we would expect today. Hill studied the thoughts, ideas and actions of men of great wealth and condensed his findings into a 13 steps program to follow. I did like what he had to say about the power of our thoughts and beliefs and how that has a direct impact on the results we create in our lives.

The Richest Man in Babylon

The Richest Man in Babylon
The success secrets of the ancients- the most inspiring book on wealth ever written
George S. Clason

According to the blurb this book contains the ‘secrets to acquiring money, keeping money, and making money earn more money’. Indeed very important concepts to get your head around if you want to increase your wealth. The author, Clason presents these concepts through telling tales from an ancient time in Babylon. There is no doubt this book teaches the broad concepts of acquiring wealth. I particularly liked the point raised that if you want to learn about something, anything for that matter, study is required. Seek out people who are already proficient in the knowledge you are trying to acquire and then study them. So true! However, for the time poor modern woman there may be other books better suited that explain the same concepts but with actual actionable steps that can be implemented in the modern world.
